What is Château de Beaucastel?
Château de Beaucastel is an estate defined by diversified vineyards and a blend of traditional and modern winemaking.
Its 100 hectares include 70 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines planted to all 13 traditional grapes, creating layered reds and whites. The Rouge is a structured blend led by Grenache and Mourvèdre, supported by Syrah, Counoise, and others. The Blanc centers on Roussanne, showing the estate’s focus on serious white wine.
In the cellar, grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with natural yeasts, and matured in large neutral oak foudres for the reds to preserve fruit transparency, while the whites see smaller barrel aging (with new oak for Roussanne Vieilles Vignes). A brief pre-fermentation flash-heating step is used to sterilize the must (reducing the risk of spoilage yeasts like Brettanomyces), which allows lower sulfur dioxide additions, illustrating the winery’s pragmatic approach to innovation.
Together, these choices shape wines with depth, clarity, and a distinct sense of place.
